First hydrogen-powered narrow-gauge railway in the world starting from 2022 in Zillertal

Innsbruck (OTS)– Austrian Business Confederation Chairman Franz Hörl is pleased to announce the nationwide award for the new Zillertal Railway, which will be operated by hydrogen fuel cells in the very near future. For the current implementation of this vision, Zillertaler Verkehrsbetriebe AG has now been honored in Vienna with the Ö3 Transport Award in the category “Public Transport”.

Wirtschaftsbund project provided first approaches

The first feasibility studies for the conversion of the narrow-gauge railway were developed as part of a nationwide project of the Tyrolean Economic Association for Electric Mobility in cooperation with the Green Energy Center. “This forward-looking model is thus the best proof that factual and constructive political work can lead to the realization of real flagship projects – because this will make Tyrol the scene of a globally unique transport innovation,” said Hörl, who also serves as chairman of the supervisory board of Zillertaler Verkehrsbetriebe AG groundbreaking change .

“Coupled with the use of regional hydropower, it creates a mobility solution that makes the best possible use of existing resources and also provides a strong response to the growing problem of motorized private transport. Thus, the new Zillertal Railway will not only become a role model in terms of sustainability, but above all will increase the immediate quality of life of the Zillertal valley. I am confident that we will be able to conclude the final financing negotiations with the federal and state governments as well as regional partners on a positive note, “said Hörl.
